How to Apply
First...
- Have a look at our programmes on the DfE Find platform – this will allow you to understand our programme, support and what we have to offer.
- Choose the programme for you and begin your application on the DfE’s Apply platform. Make sure you complete your application in full... And... We’re teachers, please check the spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Submit your application.
Then...
- Wait to hear from us. We process applications very quickly and will begin to reach out to you either the same or the next working day.
- Work with the SCITT Coordinator or Partnership Lead to identify an appropriate interview slot. This will always be during school time as we think it’s really important to observe you interacting with children - they are who we are here for anyway!
- Once you’ve got the information of your interview slot, book time off and begin to prepare. There is nothing to be frightened of, though - we are here to support you on your journey to becoming a teacher.
On the Day...
- Dress smartly and arrive on time - it’s good to make a good first impression.
- Be confident but humble.
- You will get to meet your Lead Interviewer, a SCITT Leader who can answer any questions that you might have - they will put you at ease and explain the process of the recruitment activity.
- You will complete a series of recruitment tasks so that we can assess your readiness to begin your journey to becoming a teacher - these might happen in a different order to the following:
- Literacy and Numeracy skills assessments: These provide us with a baseline of functional literacy and numeracy to help us plan support if you are successful in joining the programme. You can prepare for these using the practice papers that we send you if you are shortlisted to focus your revision.
- Pupil-focused activity: This helps us to review your engagement and professional relationships with pupils from the age group in which you are applying to train to teach. Show us that you can form appropriate relationships with pupils. Be kind but always remember boundaries... bonus points if you use their names!
- Formal interview: Led by two Embrace Leaders/Partners, this helps us to assess your readiness to train to teach against our values, curriculum and the demands of the programme.
You should hear the outcome on the same day - we will either tell you there and then or ring you to let you know. If you’re successful in receiving an offer, we will update this and add any conditions on to your application - it’s up to you then to accept it.
We have heard of some providers applying pressure to accept offers before you’ve had chance to either properly consider your options or attend all of your interviews. They shouldn’t do this and should encourage you to complete all of your recruitment activity so that you can make an informed decision. We will never apply unwanted pressure or give you tight deadlines to respond to an offer. Obviously, as we get towards the end of the year, and programmes begin to get full, you may need to make a decision quicker than normal.
After You’ve Accepted
- All offers will always be conditional - this means you need to meet certain criteria in order to actually commence the programme. There are standard ones which all providers will require:
- An enhanced DBS - checking for any past criminal history to protect our pupils.
- An occupational health check - assessing whether you are fit to train to teach.
- References - These help us to understand you in different contexts, e.g. work/study and how you have prepared yourself to train to teach.
- Additionally, you may receive more conditions, depending on your application, e.g. completing your degree, informing us of any gaps in employment etc. this is a requirement under Safer Recruitment practices and government legislation.
